Title: The Mind-Body Connection

Ariana Miller, a young teen who suffered from congenital heart disease, was in need of healing support and something to look forward to each week. A music therapist from Resounding Joy Inc., a local nonprofit that runs a program called Healing Notes for young children in hospital settings, was just what she needed. Ariana had days where she didn’t want to get out of bed but if she knew she had a music therapy appointment, she would be up in a heartbeat. Resounding Joy’s services completely elevated her mood and helped her focus on the good while forgetting about the disease. When Ariana passed away at age 13 while waiting for a heart transplant, her parents wanted to create a concert for raising money so that all young cardiac patients could receive the same treatment. This resulted in the Ariana Miller Music with Heart Program, which has provided free music therapy sessions to more than 1,000 children to Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego. Resounding Joy’s Healing Notes program has expanded to a palliative in-home program for children and teens with life-limiting illnesses and injuries who light up when they see one of their music therapists. Music has always been very therapeutic to underserved populations and Resounding Joy’s services have always been the best of the bunch, providing unparalleled support and influence to the San Diego area.
